Rare mouse found in Mecklenburg Co.

By Kristen Hampton - bio l email

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - Rob Gilson thought his find might be significant. The biology student found a rare mouse inside at trap at Cowan's Ford Wildlife Refuge.

The mouse hasn't been seen in Mecklenburg County since 1968. Mecklenburg County Natural Resources coordinator Lenny Lampel mentors Ron.

"Although it does live in a field, it's different from a field mouse," said Lampel, "because a field mouse is just a name people call any old mouse running around in a field."

The species discovered by Gilson is called an oldfield mouse. The little guys usually don't go so far north. They're native to the more southern areas of the Southeast.

MINT HILL, NC (WBTV) - Police are alerting parents that an unknown man could be photographing children. No crime has been committed, but the strange behavior has police concerned.

Mint Hill investigators say an eight-year-old girl reported to her parents Sunday afternoon that a man photographed her playing in the snow near her home.

"The thought of a sick, perverted man having a picture of my daughter infuriates me," said Kelly Dawson, the girl's mother.

The little girl told her parents that the man was sitting in the passenger side of a red pickup truck and took pictures. The girl said the man took three photographs with a Polaroid camera.

The incident sounds similar to another case recently reported in a different Mint Hill neighborhood.

Deer crashes into dry cleaners, then wanders into Food Lion

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - Shoppers at a Matthews-area grocery store got quite a surprise when a deer ran into the Food Lion on Thursday evening.

The deer walked into the Food Lion at Highway 51 and Idlewild Road, which was open for business with customers inside.

Witnesses told WBTV that the deer first ran into a glass door at a dry cleaners in the same shopping complex as the Food Lion. The glass door shattered from the collision.

That's when witnesses say the deer ran down to the Food Lion, causing the automatic doors to open, allowing the deer to go inside.

Once inside, witnesses say the deer laid down in an aisle and was later removed from the store by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Care and Control.

The deer was released into a wooded area behind the store unharmed.
