Police have special message about high blood pressure

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is holding a Community Blood Drive this week.

Most of the 68 million people living with high blood pressure don't realize that they are eligible to donate blood.

The Police Department would like to remind those individuals that they may still give life-saving blood, even if they take blood pressure medication.

Donors can make their contribution at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, located at 601 E. Trade Street in Charlotte, Friday May 31, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Veterans invited to free art classes

Veterans invited to free art classes

The Matthews Community Center is inviting all veterans to a series of free painting and drawing classes.

Art for Veterans is the Community Center's way of saying thank you to veterans for their service to the USA.

Art supplies and a membership to the Matthews Artists Guild are included in the program, as well.

Veterans interested in expressing themselves through art should join the first class at the McDowell Arts Center, located at 123 McDowell Street in Matthews, Wednesday May 29, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Additional classes follow, Wednesdays June 5 and 19, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The cost of the program is free. Registration is required.

Park tells public to hit the ground running

The Colonel Francis Beatty Park is inviting the public to celebrate National Trails Day with a series of races.

Runners can compete in timed 6k and 11k trail races. Awards go to the top finishers in each age group.

A 2k Fun Run is offered, as well. Everyone who completes the run receives a finisher ribbon.

All races start and finish in the general area of the Visitor Center Pavilion.

Runners can join the races at Colonel Francis Beatty Park, located at 4330 Weddington Road in Matthews, Saturday June 1, at 9 a.m. Bib pickup begins at 7:30 a.m.

Online registration ranges from $10 to $45. The cost for race-day registration is $45 for the 6k race and $55 for the 11k race.

Run to benefit brain tumor research

The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas is hosting its Grey Matters 5k Trail Run/Walk this weekend.

Participants can enjoy a great morning of fitness and fun while burning calories through the beautiful wooded trails of Reedy Creek Park.

Medals go to the top 3 overall Male and Female runners in each age group.

Families and jogging strollers are welcome on the 4-foot wide pea gravel trail.

The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness of the impact of brain tumors and providing support for the development of treatment strategies and cooperative biomedical research related to brain tumors in the Charlotte region.

Pre-registered runners should meet at Reedy Creek Park, located at 2900 Rocky River Road in Charlotte, Saturday May 25, prior to the 8 a.m. start-time.

Check-in and 'day of' registration begins at 7 a.m.

Library helps women transfer life skills to resume

The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County is inviting unemployed women to a resume workshop.

Women in the Workforce is aimed at helping women to identify life skills that can enhance a resume.

The workshop is most suitable for women who have little or no previous work experience.

Participants can explore how to use the skills they have learned from hobbies, volunteer work, and homemaking to obtain the job they really want.

Women interested in improving their resume should meet at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County's Main Branch, located at 310 North Tryon Street in Charlotte, Tuesday May 21, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The cost is free, and the program is open to women of all ages. Registration is not required.

From Sit-ins to Eat-ins: Celebrating 50 yrs of Desegregation in Charlotte

Charlotte made national headlines in May 1963 when Chamber of Commerce members led by Mayor Stan Brookshire voluntarily joined with African American leaders to go two-by-two and desegregate Charlotte’s leading restaurants.  This “eat-in” came three years after the sit-in movement had opened lunch counters. 

Charlotte Civil Rights activist Dr. Reginald Hawkins triggered the action, leading a march on May 20, 1963 from Johnson C.
