Brazilian Celebration: A Night in Rio

The Latin American Coalition is hosting its annual Brazilian Celebration this weekend.

A Night in Rio offers a journey through Brazil in an evening of traditional dancing and live musical performances of Samba, Bossa Nova and Brazilian Beats.

Authentic foods, crafts and art complete the experience, accompanied by the contagious energy of Brazil's famous Carnaval.

Party-goers can join the fun at the Neighborhood Theatre, located at 511 East 36th Street in Charlotte, Saturday February 23, at 7 p.m.

Folk Society Gathering presents Scottish fiddler Jamie Laval

The Charlotte Folk Society Gathering is presenting a concert featuring virtuoso Scottish fiddler Jamie Laval, one of the premier Celtic violinists on the international music scene today.

Jamie has been known to create rapt audiences with his intensely passionate performances of traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Quebec, rendered with hints of classical refinement and ethnic music from around the world.

Joining him on the stage are piper E. J. Jones and guitarist David Brown.

Concert-goers can catch the show at the Great Aunt Stella Center, located at 926 Elizabeth Avenue in Charlotte, Friday February 8, from 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

Matthews Playhouse presents Aida

The Matthews Playhouse is presenting its performance of Aida this weekend.

Elton John and Tim Rice teamed together to create this contemporary musical about the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier.

As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever.

Theater-goers can catch the play at the Matthews Community Center, located at 100 East McDowell Street in Matthews, Friday and Saturday February 8 and 9, at 8 p.m.

Matinees are offered Saturday and Sunday February 9 and 10, at 2 p.m

BofA, Merrill Lynch to card holders: ‘Museums On Us’ this weekend

Bank of America is celebrating Black History Month with ‘Museums On Us’ by offering free weekend access to four local museums.

Any Bank of America or Merrill Lynch cardholder in Charlotte can visit the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Levine Museum of the New South, the Mint Museum Randolph, or the Mint Museum Uptown on Saturday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 3 (and the first full weekend of each month in 2013).

Those attending need to simply present your Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit card, along with a photo ID, to gain free general admission to any participating institution. Cardholders only; guests are not eligible for free admission.

Program excludes fundraising events, special exhibitions and ticketed shows the first full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each month, and can not be combined with other offers.

Matthews Playhouse is performing Irvin Berlin's "White Christmas".

The play runs Nov. 30 - Dec. 16, at the Fullwood Theatre (100 McDowell Street East) in Matthews.

UniverSoul Circus coming to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC - UniverSoul Circus has created a big top thrill-ride infused with an unparalleled global mix of circus artistry, music, dance and style – all inspired by reflections of the world around US.

The UniverSoul Circus 2012 production, entitled “US,” features Shaolin Kung Fu acrobats from China, bone-breaking contortionists with hop-hop flair from Guinea, and hilarious acrobatic comedy from South Africa.

The Circus will take place November 13 through the 18 at the Freedom Mart parking lot in Charlotte.

Violinist Ray Chen to visit NC schools

CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte Concerts is launching its second concert, featuring violinist Ray Chen, with a special educational outreach program.

Chen, winner of the International Queen Elisabeth Competition and the Yehudi Menuhin Competition 2008, will be visiting three schools and their music classes the day of his performance on Thursday, November 1.

The classes will feature demonstrations from Chen, as well as a Q&A session with students.

Charlotte Concerts usually hosts an Informance (Informational/Informal Performance) with each artist the day of their event. However, for Chen, the group is furthering its mission of enhancing music education of students from Mecklenburg and all adjacent counties in both North and South Carolina.

Chen will be visiting the Northwest School of the Arts from 11:55 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., Providence High School from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m., and Charlotte Country Day School from 2:30 p.m.
