The Matthews Town Board has approved a lease agreement with the Matthews Free Medical Clinic.
The Town will lease the facility located at 196 S. Trade Street (the former Bradford Clinic) to the Matthews Free Medical Clinic for the next decade, allowing the clinic to double its space in the 3,068 square foot facility.
The building was purchased a few years ago as part of the long range plan for expanding Stumptown Park. The Town recently added public restroom facilities to the rear of the building for park patrons. The clinic will lease the front portion of the building.
The long range plans for expansion of Stumptown Park include purchasing additional adjacent pieces of property as they become available thus there is no immediate plans to expand the park in the next decade and the clinic could lease the building.
The Matthews Free Medical Clinic will spend approximately $165,000 to upfit the interior of the building for their needs which will more than cover the expected market rent costs ($143,000) of a facility in this area of the Town.
“Leasing this building to the Matthews Free Medical Clinic is a positive for our community. The medical clinic provides an incredible service to those in our community who have no health insurance. We have no immediate need for the building and this agreement allows the building to be renovated and used while avoiding a vacant negative space in our downtown core,” said Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor.
“We are grateful for the opportunity, provided by the Town of Matthews, to lease 196 S. Trade Street. The new space will enable us to meet our community’s ever-growing need for healthcare by treating more people, increasing volunteer capacity and expanding our current services,” said Amy Carr, Executive Director of the Matthews Free Medical Clinic.
The Matthews Free Medical Clinic has experienced double digit increases in patient visits since opening their doors in 2004. The clinic provides primary care, chronic disease care, women’s care, psychiatry, orthopedics, physical therapy, education and pharmacy services for those without healthcare. In 2011, the clinic had over 3,000 patient visits and is currently operating out of a 1,400 sq. foot renovated house in Matthews.
