Making Christmas come to life on paper

MINT HILL, NC (WBTV) - Dennis the Menace Illustrator Marcus Hamilton recently visited the WBTV studio to talk to us about how he got started drawing Dennis the Menace and to talk about why he likes drawing Christmas scenes so much.

"Dennis has a lot of respect and love for Santa Claus and he's probably thinking you know, when I grow up, I'd like to be Santa Claus," says Marcus Hamilton, Illustrator of the Monday through Saturday Dennis the Menace panels.

"It's just fun. I really enjoy the Christmas thing. I put more into the Christmas daily panels than the whole rest of the year," says Hamilton.

How Hamilton became a Dennis the Menace illustrator is quite a tale. He actually began his career at WBTV in 1965 in the art department. He was later a freelance illustrator for 21 years. Then Hamilton says computer graphics put him out of the illustration business.

CMPD and 'Captain Claus' helps families in need

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - For 630 Charlotte families, Christmas is coming a few days early as officers and cadets with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police along with other volunteers team up to deliver toys and neccessities to those families.

At a south Charlotte warehouse, dubbed 'Christmas Warehouse,' hundreds of boxes are filled with toys and other gifts for kids. Continuous rows of bikes line the walls.

In addition to the gifts for children, organizer Kathy Nichols said CMPD wanted to take the event a step further. Volunteers will also be delivering sacks of food and 600 donated hams to families along with toiletries to help the families make it through the next two weeks while children are out of school.

'Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful' garners national accolades

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - In 2001, the Mecklenburg County Land Use and Environmental Services Agency was directed by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners to develop a plan to help clean up the roadside litter problem.

Less than a decade later, that program – Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful, Inc., an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful, Inc organization. – is again being recognized as a leader when it comes to cleaning up litter here, and to help keep it from happening in the first place.
