Charlotte schools close for third day in a row

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Due to the continued icy conditions on residential streets in Mecklenburg County from Monday's storm, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district announced that it will close for students the third day in a row on Wednesday.

The district says that teachers and staff will operate on a two-hour delay. CMS employees should note that this is a CODE A: Optional Teacher Workday.

Staff working hard to maintain roads

MATTHEWS – Public Work staff members with the Town of Matthews have been working around the clock since Sunday to keep Town streets passable.

“We are experiencing very unusual winter weather and are working as hard as we can to clear major roadways, heavily traveled connector streets,” said Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett. “Crews have been working around the clock since the storm began early Monday morning to clear these streets. At this point we do believe that we have the major roadways and connectors clear but we do expect wet streets to potentially refreeze tonight. People should be careful traveling tonight and tomorrow.”

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Garbage and recycling pickup is canceled for Tuesday, January 11. Weather permitting, regular service will resume on Wednesday, January 12. Monday and Tuesday customers should leave their garbage and recycling carts curbside until all collections are completed by Saturday, January 15.  

Yard waste and bulky item pickup is suspended until Tuesday, January 18. Residents with bulky item collection scheduled for this week are advised to call 311 (704.336.7600) after their scheduled collection date to reschedule for next week. 

Butler grad completes basic training

MATTHEWS - Army Spec. Patrick K. Moss has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - CMS will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 11, due to severe weather and Jan. 11 Board meeting time changes to 2 p.m. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 11 for all students due to severe weather. CMS employees should note that this is a CODE A: Optional Teacher Workday.

There is a two-hour delay report time for all staff and teachers can work for home. The scheduled make up day for Jan. 11 will be Feb. 18 and the Jan. 10 make up day is Jan. 17.
